The Board Chairperson of the Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA), Dr Zuze Dulanya, has emphasised the need for constructive engagement among stakeholders to address challenges delaying the development of the Kanyika Niobium Mining Project in Mzimba District.
Dr Dulanya made the remarks during a visit by the MMRA Board to the mining project, which is being developed by Globe Metals & Mining, to discuss the challenges affecting its progress and explore possible solutions.
During the visit, the Board also engaged with members of the communities surrounding the mining project to hear their views and interact with them on matters relating to the project.
He said the project has experienced delays spanning nearly 20 years, raising the need for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions aimed at identifying a common way forward.
“We came here to Globe Metals to discuss and resolve the challenges affecting the project. The mine is for our own benefit as Malawians, and through the challenges we have discussed, we can chart a common direction,” Dr Dulanya said.
He therefore emphasised that addressing the outstanding challenges requires cooperation, open dialogue and a shared commitment among the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the project progresses towards implementation.
According to Globe Metals & Mining Managing Director, Lisungu Chirwa, mining operations at the Kanyika Niobium Mining Project are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2028.
The Kanyika Niobium Mining Project is considered an important investment in Malawi’s mining sector, with the potential to contribute to economic development through employment creation, government revenue and business opportunities for local communities.
