The Minister of Mining, Hon. Thoko Tembo, MP has urged staff of the Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) to play a key role in shaping the future of Malawi\u2019s mining sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tembo made the remarks on Monday when he visited MMRA offices in Lilongwe, where he engaged with the MMRA\u2019s staff on the authority\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said MMRA staff are at the centre of Malawi\u2019s mining development and encouraged them to use their day-to-day experiences to identify gaps in existing systems and recommend improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c I would like to encourage you to learn as much as you can about the processes that you go through every day, but most importantly, when you are doing your work, ensure that you keep in mind how to improve the system so that future generations can benefit from your work,\u201d Tembo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister said laws and systems may have gaps, and those working directly with the processes are best placed to identify challenges and recommend practical solutions for a smoother workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He therefore commended MMRA for its public awareness initiatives, particularly its use of social media, radio and television programmes to explain its mandate and mining-related issues to Malawians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tembo said there has been an information gap between the mining regulatory authority and the public, which needed to be addressed to reduce misinformation surrounding mining activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister also stressed the importance of collaboration among institutions in the mining sector, saying the Ministry of Mining, MMRA and other relevant institutions should work together to advance the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his remarks, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Mining, Dr Rodwell Mzonde, urged MMRA to ensure that the licensing system is effectively managed to prevent people from obtaining licences without undertaking mining activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said inactive licences could congest the system and undermine efforts to ensure that Malawi benefits from its mineral resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Mzonde also called for increased public awareness on the difference between commercial mineral exports and the export of mineral samples for testing and analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting Director General of MMRA, Lloyd Muhara, SC, thanked the Minister for visiting the authority and assured him that MMRA will take the advice seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said MMRA has established public awareness initiatives to combat misinformation and highlighted the authority\u2019s website and the cadastral system, which provide access to information on mining licences, regulations and other relevant information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
